Hea geograafiahuviline!

Olete oodatud kolmapäeval, 19. novembril 2008 kella 10-17 Eesti Rahvusraamatukokku,
teabepäevale GEOGRAAFIA PANEB PAIKA, millega tähistame neljandat korda rahvusvahelist GIS- ja geograafiapäeva.

Kavas on:

ettekanded Eesti teadus- ja õppeasutuste, riigi- ja omavalitsusasutuste ning firmade esindajatelt
tarkvaralahenduste, kaartide ja raamatute näitused ning esitlused
veebiviktoriin
arvutitunnid õpilastele
ettekannete vaheaegadel ekskursioonid raamatukogu kartograafia- ja geograafiasaali (vajalik eelregistreerimine)
laste joonistusvõistluse tööde näitus ja võitjate autasustatamine
Osalemine on tasuta.

10.00 arriving to Vanaveski Puhkemaja and taking a trip in the swamp
Please bring cameras, hot tea, dress warmly

14.00 lunch

a common hot soup action in the cottage (some people should heat the soup)

15.00-19.00 seminar "Interface design challenges" by Kristjan Jansen, interaction designer and information architect

Lecture, workshop and discussion looking for questions what is important in human-machine interaction and how to develop a user-friendly interface illustrated with good solutions

19.00 dinner and sauna

Some people help in kitchen.
Each should take care of the sauna drinks.

10.00 breakfast and returning to the city

Commission consults on how to put Europe into the lead of the transition to Web 3.0

Europe could take the lead in the next generation of the Internet. The European Commission today outlined the main steps that Europe has to take to respond to the next wave of the Information Revolution that will intensify in the coming years due to trends such as social networking, the decisive shift to on-line business services, nomadic services based on GPS and mobile TV and the growth of smart tags. The report shows that Europe is well placed to exploit these trends because of its policies to support open and pro-competitive telecom networks as well as privacy and security. A public consultation has been launched today by the Commission on the policy and private sector responses to these opportunities. The Commission report also unveils a new Broadband Performance Index (BPI) that compares national performance on key measures such as broadband speed, price, competition and coverage. Sweden and the Netherlands top this European broadband league, which complements the more traditional broadband penetration index used so far by telecoms regulators.

Invitation to IST'2008 symposium 27-28 October

The second edition of IST'2008 symposium will take place on 27-28 October at Dorpat Conference center in Tartu. It will be again organised by UT's Institute of Computer Science, in cooperation with the Estonian Centre of Excellence in Computer Science.

This year the symposium covers two topics: Internet Technology and Enterprise Systems. We have the honour of receiving three international speakers who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise in these fields. The program and the online registration form are available

IMKE Likings

Likings is a simple course assignment done in the Intro course, with just a spreadsheet as the interface. This may or may not imply a community concept to be elaborated further, but I thought it may be worth tasting.

It invites you to insert/update your own profile row and it allows you to add profile dimensions (column). The idea is that everyone profiles oneself. Here 1 stands for "like", 0 for "don't like" and 0.5 for "sort of like". Join if you like.

The outcome can be played around with this explorer tool prototype. Note: I will have to update this manually, so it is not real-time.
